Shipping Bad

Are you a Perfectionist or a Finisher?

If you keep moving in circles and do not ship it, soon it will lose its value. Have you ever gone back to your months-old draft and found yourself clueless about what you were planning to write. Similarly, if you keep noting down all those amazing initiatives you have planned in your notebook, they will soon end up as a pile of pages and nothing else.

What if you get them out today? Just make them live! And announce that you have made this!

Even if it is bad just ship it today. As Seth Godin says, “Don’t be afraid to ship bad stuff. The more you ship bad, the more you will be compelled to ship the next best in every way possible!”

Trust me, this way you will feel more satisfied with the work you do than binge-watching those episodes.

A similar concept was also proved by Cal Newport in Deep Work. A study by one of the world’s best know psychologists, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi showed that- “ The best moments usually occur when a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile”.

Most people believe they feel happier when they are relaxed. But, if we try to remember the moments when we ticked off that one task from the to-do list, it definitely made us feel more satisfied than the next episode of Netflix.
Thus sitting down to do your work even if it is just raw and bad, is easier to enjoy than free time. As such depth has built-in goals, feedbacks, and challenged all of which make us feel worthwhile and focused. Every human being is at their best when immersed deeply in something challenging.

So, let’s roll up our sleeves and just ship our First Bad Draft!
