Embracing Ambiguity

You must have come across a situation where you didn’t know what lies ahead. It could be an everyday thing too. We all have been dealing with ambiguity throughout our lives. Today you don’t know how the next day will be. But you try to make a plan to take charge of the day ahead. Every morning writing that to-do is creating a plan to make the best out of the day. By the end, it may go productive or be procrastinated to tomorrow. In the morning, you were confident and optimistic about yourself and were dealing with ambiguity. Being ambiguous, though is not particularly comfortable, allows us to open up creatively and pursue lots of different ideas, and arrive at unexpected solutions. Holding different possibilities in tension allows us to look at a greater perspective rather than putting all eggs in one basket.

I learned about this concept in Human-Centered Design Course. In the starting, our team had no idea where we will go with this, what will happen and what will be the output. One thing that remained constant that we all were optimistic as we were not scared of anything. We were not sure of the impact we were looking forward to working upon, but we gave ourselves the opportunity and permission to explore. All those brainstorming sessions and workshops were our space to just be creative and let it all out. We had lots of different ideas and it was so empowering to hear everyone talk about the impact they look forward to creating. Your ideas can be vague but turning them to vogue lies in iteration. You just have to immerse yourself in the process and keep experimenting.
